Last night I got my hands on a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale. For some reason I was hesitant to try it (I think I had Great Divide or Oskar Blues on my mind). I remember reading that this was the first time they had ever bottled their anniversary ale, so I figured it was worth a shot. It is also an India Pale Ale (IPA) which is always a plus in my book.
I was debating getting a puimpkin ale since it is that time of year and all, however I decided to try the anniversary ale and brought it home.
It ends up that I am very, very happy that I tried this beer. It is extremely hoppy in flavor almost like a double IPA would be. The cascade hops were very tasty and the Chinook Hops added a nice bitter taste that was excellent, not too strong but certainly there.
There was a pine flavor that came through in the aftertaste along with a very subtle hint of chocolate perhaps? Alcohol content is 5.9%, and after drinking a few I was feeling pretty darn good.
This evening I paired the anniversary ale with some freshly made rice krispy treats that had M&M’s placed in them. The kids did a great job on those treats, but that is another story. The bitterness of the beer went very well with the sweetness and chocolate in the krispy treats. It was a good dessert.
I would recommend this beer for most beer drinkers who enjoy a hearty, flavorful and bitter beer. If you are a Coors light person, this probably isn’t the beer for you. If you are a hop head do what you can to get your hands on some of these, you won’t be sorry.
