3 runners die at Detroit marathon

Pretty sad, you hear of this more and more often now.  I don’t know what to contribute it to.  Perhaps more under-trained not ready for prime time people attempting to do what their body is nowhere near ready to do.  At least one of them was only doing the half marathon, so I don’t know how much you can use my argument for that.  Pre-existing conditions that flared up are a possibility as well, but again this is becoming more and more common.  If that were the case why wasn’t it so prevalent 10 years ago.Higher numbers of the general population trying to do something that they underestimate?  Who knows.

(CNN) — Three runners died Sunday during the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon in Detroit, Michigan, police told CNN.

All three deaths occurred between 9 and 9:20 a.m. ET, Second Deputy Chief John Roach said.

A man in his 60s fell and hit his head, Roach said. The cause of the fall was unknown. The man was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two other men, aged 36 and 26, also collapsed during the race and were pronounced dead at the hospital, Roach said.

All three collapsed near the end of the race, he said.

The weather at the time was overcast, Roach said, with temperatures in the low 40s.

It has been some time and there has still been no released cause for these deaths.  It has been released that two of the runners were in good shape; one of them had completed over 50 full marathons.  It still perplexes me that all 3 dropped within 16 minutes of each other and within 300 meters or so of each other.  That is very strange.  The bodies have been released for burial which makes one think that they do not suspect foul play…just plain strange.

“Autopsies for the three men who died running Sunday’s Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon are complete, but what caused the deaths remains unclear, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said Monday.  The office is submitting tissue and blood for further testing, including toxicology, to determine the cause. Results could take several weeks.  “All three cases are pending,” investigator Val Knight said.

The men — Daniel Langdon, 36, of Laingsburg; Rick Brown, 65, of Marietta, Ohio, and Jon Fenlon, 26, of Waterford — all ran the half-marathon and died within a 16-minute span during the race in downtown Detroit.

Funeral arrangements were pending Monday for all three men.

Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the Detroit Media Partnership, which handles business operations for the Free Press and Detroit News, said the Detroit Medical Center provided five basic ambulances, three advanced life-support ambulances, 14 physicians and 26 other licensed medical personnel. The DMC said the event was properly prepared and staffed, he said.

“The outcomes would not have been different even if the response had been different,” he said.”
